U.S. SENATE RACE 2004 - NORTH CAROLINA

Erskine Bowles' Message Strategy

Writing in response to "Republicans raring for 'skin to rip and blood to flow,'" through negative advertising, Bowles suggested, "If you were to join me, and to instruct our party committees and any third party groups interested in running attack ads in our race to do the same, we can offer North Carolinians a real, constructive discussion of the issues. I want to make this clear: I will not be the first, but if you refuse my offer and I am attacked, I will respond." (Savodnik; bowles2004.com)

The following provides a description and analysis of Erskine Bowles' message strategy.
