Vagabond Excerpt 3: Mona on the road (35”)

Excerpt 3

 Questions

1. This is another example of the “tracking shots of the Grand Series” where we see Mona traveling.  Note that “tracking shots” are called “travellings” in French and that the term “traveling” is a synonym for “tracking” in English also.  Given the meaning of “traveling” in English, do you suppose that the prominence of tracking shots in this film might be intentional?
2. Describe the beginning of the shot.  What do we see?
3. Describe the beginning of the tracking shot.  What do we see first?  How does Mona enter the frame?
4. What importance may we give to the police car which goes by as Mona arrives?
5. What can you say about the rhythm of the tracking shot (what it suggests) and about the stopping point?
6.

Discuss the relationship between the tracking and Mona’s movement.  Why is there a clearly intentional lack of symmetry between her movement and that of the camera?
