Freedom Penetrates Prison The yellow/grey dichotomy makes a significant reappearance in the implied-sex scene. For the duration of their visit on the boat, Marnie and Mark have slept in separate rooms. Marnie's room is grey and always dark, and its walls are shot in such a way as to make it appear suitably confining. Mark's room, by contrast, is decorated in yellow and is bright.* At the prelude to the sexual encounter, Marnie, disarmed by Mark's persistence, shuts herself in her prison, closing herself to Mark in much the same way as she will when he disrobes her physically. Mark then charges forth, penetrating Marnie's fortress, and bringing forth a yellow robe with which to clothe herself anew. The light/dark contrast comes up in the dialog, as Marnie complains about Mark's reading. In fact, Mark's reading pertains directly to "curing" Marnie - the light and freedom associated with him seem to stack the deck to indicate Mark as a hero rather than a rapist.
