Technicalities The audience removes itself to the point that it starts seeing more blatantly the technical aspects of the film. When Scotty has the flashback sparked by the necklace, viewers see a graphic match and a zoom out, taking us away from the Carlotta, instead of towards the Woman, as we have been spiraling all movie long. Other moments of reflexivity, like the 360 kissing scene, show the audience the deliberate nature of its construction, and of the film, up to this point. We see Scotty suspend his beliefs and submerge himself in the moment, the way we went to the movies to submerge ourselves in the plot. Because Hitchcock likes mocking his audience, he denies us in the last quarter of the film the pleasures of fantasy and voyeurism in which we are seeing the characters partake.
