After Death

Even after Madeleine’s death, the viewers remain aligned with Scotty. As Scotty visits all the old familiar places, we still get his POV as he sees characters who look vaguely like Madeleine. Hitchcock keeps them out of focus or far enough away so that the audience strains its eyes and hopes each time one of them appears, the same way Scotty does. We feel like we’re in a nightmare too, wandering around not knowing how the story is going to continue.
