Rejection by Midge

The audience is so closely aligned to Scotty that when Midge ridicules and rejects the story of Carlotta, the audience is frustrated with her for her lack of understanding. We may not completely fall for the story ourselves but I, at least, remain defensive of our main character and the beliefs he has. Spoto claims, “so insistently and with such irresistible romanticism has the idea been proposed to us-and so much do we want Scotty to be Madeleine’s savior (and lover)- that we have accepted the fantastic theory and dismiss Midge’s logical positivism” (284).
