The Love Theme

The love theme, “Duo” (music clip), possess characteristics that helps it to act as a musical source meant to portray a highly stylized and commercial-like scene because it is so different from the rest of the film score. This theme is different from the tonally confusing and rapidly changing melodies in the other music throughout the film. By altering the harmonic style used in the love theme as compared to other pieces, such as the fandango, the music presents a different atmosphere. The difference in style of this theme steers away from that of the rest of the film. In a way, the music cuts away from the “main program” (the actually film) to interrupt for a commercial announcement.

In the background we hear a duet between a clarinet and an oboe with a constant string rhythm, emphasizing the train travel. The duo consists of descending half steps that reset and descend again, and alternates from the oboe and clarinet. The two instruments produce a melody that sounds conversational but, just like the uneasy stare we are given by Eve, the instruments end on a dissonant and uneasy chord. This lack of resolution in sound also creates ambivalence in Eve’s character, but the entire interaction between Eve and Roger.
