"The Mother's Voice" In addition to their repeated visual reflection, Hank and Jo share a special connection through song. Twice in the film, Hank recognizes both his mother and himself through her songs. This musical mirror gives the audience an anchor with which they might grasp onto each character. Connecting the two through song also serves to disconnect Hank from his father. Rather than the traditional father and son relationship, Hank tends to rely on the care given by his stronger mother. At times, then, he represents a mirror between the two-- highlighting their differences as well as sparking trauma between them. |
